"Experts said the cave-in was due to the local geology of the area. The karst landscape in the Guangxi region means when there is rain, the rising water underground can wash away the soil, causing a cave-in. "

Amerikanerne kaller visstnok alt for sinkhole.

"A large sinkhole has appeared in part of the Peak District in Derbyshire.

The hole, which eye witnesses said measures about 160ft (49m) wide, has opened up in the village of Foolow.

Caver Mark Noble, 58, from Eyam, said he saw the hole during a walk on Christmas Day, but believes the land began to fall the day before.

He said he has explored the caves at Foolow in the past as huge cavities were left in the area from an old lead mine."

Ikke ha en Corvette i karstlandskap.

"Work to rescue 8 classic cars swallowed by a sinkhole at the National Corvette Museum is going faster than expected.

Today, in an unexpected turn of events, workers were able to reach the Millionth Corvette and pull it free.

"Initially there was no intention to bring the Millionth out, but as we got in there and saw more this morning we did feel like this might be our best chance," said Danny Daniel, President of Scott, Murphy and Daniel Construction.

The car was pulled by one wheel from where it was lodged and swung free into the cavern. They were then able to lift the car and place it to rest, upside down on the bottom of the sinkhole. Finally, the Corvette was hooked up by its two tires for final lifting out of the sinkhole."

"Two years ago, a giant sinkhole swallowed trees whole in a Louisiana bayou. This year, Nasa says it could have predicted it.

It might sound like too little too late, but with five-to-ten times more sinkholes occurring in this country because of the wet weather this year, any potential tool for mapping precarious landmasses will be most welcome.

The sinkhole Nasa is basing its study on, near Bayou Corne, was a monster measuring 10.1 hectares. It was 229m (751ft) deep by the time it ceased swallowing everything in sight. In a paper published in the journal Geology, Cathleen Jones and Ron Blom, from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, have shown how radar data captured by Nasa's Uninhabited Airborne Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR) between 2011 and 2012 could have been used to predict the natural catastrophe.

The UAVSAR captures interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data—the returning waves the aircraft captures are used to generate digital surface elevation and deformation maps. It's the same technique used to assess fault lines, or even glaciers, capturing incremental changes at the centimeter scale over the course of years.

Although it would seem impossible to predict sinkholes, which happen so suddenly (at least the cover-collapse kind), the groundwork that causes them is being laid over some time.(...) "

Jordfallshull forårsaket av saltgruvekollaps:

"Officials said the giant sinkhole in south Louisiana swallowed more trees Wednesday afternoon.

The Assumption Parish Police Jury said there was a burp and slough-in around 3:25 p.m. Officials said debris and six trees were gobbled up during the latest activity.

They added there is a slight gas-like smell in the Bayou Corne area.

History of the Sinkhole

The sinkhole opened up in August 2012 and was roughly 1/24 of the size it is now. The sinkhole formed when an underground salt cavern collapsed.

In the past, seismic activity is reported, then the sinkhole burps up debris and then a slough-in happens. Burps occur when air and gas from deep in the sinkhole bubbles up. It can cause debris and an oily substance to float to the top. A slough-in is when the sinkhole swallows trees and land that is on the edge of the sinkhole. "

"Texas Brine Co. and the class-action plaintiffs who sued over the sinkhole that forced hundreds from their Bayou Corne homes have agreed to a $48.1 million settlement that includes buying out their properties and settling other claims related to the underground collapse of the company’s salt dome cavern.

Filed midday Tuesday in U.S. District Court in New Orleans, the proposed settlement is awaiting preliminary approval from Judge Jay C. Zainey and comes about a week before the litigation was set to go to trial Monday.

“We firmly believe the $48 million is a really good settlement number,” said Larry Centola, one of the attorney’s representing the owners and residents of about 90 homes and camps in the Bayou Corne area.

Though a precise number of people was not immediately available, Centola said the 90 properties have been under an evacuation order in place since Aug. 3, 2012, when the now nearly 30-acre swampland sinkhole first emerged."

"Of the eight Corvettes rescued from the sinkhole that opened beneath the National Corvette Museum in Kentucky this past February, only a few are likely to be restored.

"The last three or four cars that came out of the sinkhole . . . we didn't expect them to come out looking quite that bad," said Dana Forrester, the museum board's lead Corvette restoration member, CNN reported.
The board and multiple teams involved in both the recovery and restoration process met last week to discuss the restoration of the museum's exhibition floor that still sports a yawning 40-foot-wide by 60-foot-deep cavern and plan to meet with GM officials specializing in restoration this coming week. GM announced in February that it would help with the restoration effort. "

"A bridge inspector thought he'd found a potentially hazardous sinkhole near an Interstate 380 access ramp late last month, but a preliminary investigation suggests it's 150-year old beer caves, a remnant of a long closed brewery, officials said.

During a routine bridge inspection on July 31, an Iowa Department of Transportation staff member noticed an 18-inch void in a grassy shoulder off the Seventh/Eighth Street access ramps to I-380 southbound.

The ramp was closed to evaluate possible safety concerns, but they found more than they bargained for.

Cathy Cutler, a transportation planner with the Iowa Department of Transportation District 6 office, said the inspector lowered a camera underground revealing a structure beneath the earth."

Tittel: Jordfallshull - Synkehull - Jordsluk
Skrevet av: Grottemannen p 29.09.2014 14:19
Her må jeg si meg enig. Noen andre forslag?

Da vi i NGB nr. 60 skulle oversette Kirkland, R. J., 1958: The Karst of South Svartisen, støtte vi på ordene depression (brukt 3 ganger i rapporten), shakehole (3 ganger), sinkhole (8 ganger) og swallet hole (2 ganger). Her er hans forklaring:

Looking back at what I wrote, and the context in which I used it, the word ’depression’ - in the sense of ’indentation’ - is best translated as ’shallow basin’ or ’hollow’. My use of the term ’sinkhole’ (or ’swallow hole’) is used to denote the point at which streams enter, or have entered, underground drainage systems, and ’shakeholes’ are holes or hollows caused by solutional activity or collapse from below. The whole business was when I wrote, and evidently still is, confused by the use, and differing use, of local terms, both nationally and internationally; ...

På spørsmål sa Richard: You are quite right in saying that a ‘sinkhole’ or ‘swallow hole’ may be, or may not be, a depression or located in a depression.

Jordfallshull i Bergensområdet ?

A hole more than 33ft (10m) deep has opened up in the back garden of a house in Kent.

The day before the hole appeared, a "dark shadow" appeared in the garden of the family home in Gravesend.

Melanie Andrews said her two daughters had been playing near it in the snow and jumping over it."

"Natural treasure: Diggers searching golf course sinkhole for underground caves.

Although the term “treasure” usually brings to mind images of pirates, gold-filled wooden chests and that one guy on the beach with a metal detector, Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris and his dig team think they may have a different kind of treasure under their feet in Missouri.

Last May, a sinkhole opened up at the golf course at Big Cedar Lodge’s Top of the Rock Ozarks Heritage Preserve after heavy rainfall. Nobody was injured and the initial plan was to fill it up with massive boulders, smooth it over and get back to hacking away on the green. That’s when Morris stepped in.

Morris has something of a fascination with hidden, underground caves in the area — his interest dates back to 1993, when he uncovered a formation described by National Geographic as “an underground chapel” after five years of searching. After it was noted that water sprung up from Top of the Rock’s sinkhole, Morris had the notion that the two could possibly be connected via a long underground cave system, so he and his team stepped in."

"Six months after a sinkhole opened up atop a golf course at Big Cedar Lodge’s Top of the Rock Ozarks Heritage Preserve, noted conservationist and Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris is deep into a national treasure hunt that may well reveal a hidden natural wonder buried deep within the Ozarks.

In May 2015 a collapse occurred after heavy rainfalls throughout the Ozark region, resulting in the creation of a large sinkhole spanning 70 feet across and running 40 feet deep. The spectacle occurred directly adjacent to the meticulously landscaped Tom Watson-designed putting green and drew worldwide media attention to Big Cedar Lodge and Top of the Rock Golf Course, just south of Branson, Missouri.

After confirming the site’s stability geological engineers suggested filling the hole with large boulders and restoring the golf course to its original design. Morris, however, chose to explore in the hopes of finding a secret passageway and uncovering a massive cave system underneath the golf course and surrounding area."

"A man who made his fortune from fishing tackle has discovered a complex cave system underneath the golf course he owns following the opening of a massive sinkhole.

Billionaire Johnny Morris, who has amassed a £3 billion fortune from his Bass Pro Shops, opened the Top of the Rock Golf Course in 2014 but nearly had to close it following the appearance of the hole a year later.

But rather than fill in the hole on the grounds on the Ozarks mountain range in Missouri, the 68-year-old businessman decided to explore."

"Some people in Lehigh County are wondering where the water is going after they noticed part of the Coplay Creek has dried out. It turns out, two sinkholes are to blame. "The water is disappearing underground," said Brett Long, property manager of the Tate family farm in Whitehall Township.
According to Long, water and fish have been funneling into the sinkholes for at least a few days. "I would just like to know where the water is going," Long said. "Out of nowhere, there is an empty creek bed from here to the lake." An engineering company contracted by Whitehall Township said about 400 gallons of water per minute are flowing into a sinkhole. Experts with the firm believe the sinkholes lead to an underground cavern or waterway."

"A cluster of giant karst sinkholes, also known as tiankengs, has been discovered in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, one of the largest tiankeng clusters in the world, geologists announced Thursday.

In total, 49 tiankengs and over 50 funnels of between 50 to 100 meter in diameter were found in the over 200-km karst landform belt in Hanzhong City, said Liu Tongliang, head of the karst geology research institute under the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences (CAGS).

The belt, located between 32 and 33 degrees north latitude, is the northernmost karst landform region ever found in the world. All previous discoveries were between 24 and 31 degrees north latitude, said Liu."

"Who says we're done exploring the Earth?

Scientists in China announced a major new discovery this week: 49 massive sinkholes that were previously unknown, representing the highest natural density of the phenomenon in the world.

Government researchers discovered the sinkholes during the course of a four-month survey in the Qinling-Bashan Mountains, which are located in the Hanzhong area of northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

The 49 sinkholes are clustered in a 230-square-mile patch of land within the 2,000 square miles that were surveyed.

The largest of the sinkholes has a diameter of 1,706 feet and a depth of 1,050 feet.

The scientists also found several species of rare plants and Chinese giant flying squirrels, which have striking red fur."

"Engineers testing ceiling strength of Cambria Cavern

Engineers are boring holes into a cave that opened up in a neighborhood west of Round Rock in an effort to determine the strength of the ceiling, but had to halt because of a leak in the equipment.

Surveyors were also out at the site near Ephraim Road and Cambria Drive in the Brushy Creek neighborhood, working to georeference the underground cave map to locations above ground. That will help them determine what needs repairs.

Crews have completed three of the five core samples, and hope to finish the rest Wednesday after repairing the equipment that had a hydraulic leak. A Williamson County spokeswoman says each core sample can take several hours. Next week, engineers will work to create a 3D map of the cave."

The cavern underneath a neighborhood west of Round Rock could be even bigger than engineers first thought.

While Williamson County officials were drilling for core samples around the cave that opened up in the Brushy Creek neighborhood Feb. 8, they discovered an air pocket about 20 feet away from the entrance, toward Ephraim Road.
